Quito was founded by Sebastian de Benalcazar in 1534. Following
the Conquest the Spaniards began building monasteries and palatial
mansions that made Quito a center of artistic achievement; one recognized
internationally when it was named a World Heritage Site.
Quito is the Capital of
Ecuador, with a population of approximately 2 million. Quito
is a City of contrasts, Colonial architecture and Cathedrals
and modern state of the art skyscrapers and shopping centers,
all within a frame of snow-topped volcanoes.

Quito has many cultural
as well as social activities, ranging from dance clubs and bars
to culturally rich museums and art fairs. The cost of living is
still reasonable, compared to other South American capitals.
